Resolve Network Performance Issues

Problem Description

You are experiencing network performance issues, such as high latency or packet loss.

Problem Solution

You can increase the ring buffer size of the network interfaces.

This option reduces the probability of packet loss and improves the network performance by allowing the network interfaces to store more packets in the ring buffer. Thus, the network interfaces can handle bursts of incoming packets more efficiently. This option also increases the memory usage and CPU usage.

Important

This option may not be suitable for all use cases as it can increase latency. It is recommended to test the performance before and after applying this option to check if it truly improves the network performance.

To raise the ring buffer size use the following command:

[artesca-os@<NODE_NAME> ~]$

sudo nmcli connection modify <iface> ethtool.ring-rx 4078

  1. Replace <NODE_NAME> with the name of the node you want to modify. Apply the changes on all nodes to keep consistency.

  2. Replace <iface> with the name of the physical interface you want to modify.

  3. Add the wanted value to the ethtool.ring-rx option. 4078 is a recommended value. Fine-tuning may be required to find the optimal value.
