Capacity Expansion¶
ARTESCA supports two modes of capacity expansion, allowing you to grow your storage infrastructure as your needs evolve:
Scale Up — Add data disks to an existing storage node. This mode is suited when nodes have available disk slots.
Scale Out — Add new storage nodes to the cluster. This mode extends the cluster horizontally and is suited for larger capacity increases or when existing nodes are fully populated.
In both cases, ARTESCA provides flexibility in the disk capacities that can be used. Any disk capacity may be added, except in low-density configurations where the initial data disks were 16 TB or smaller, in which case disk capacity constraints apply.
Tip
To optimize overhead, disks should preferably be added in groups matching the local protection configuration (for example, groups of 12 disks).
Note
In Scale Up scenarios, the combination of mixed disk capacities across expansion rounds may require revisiting the metadata database sizing. If you are unsure whether your configuration is affected, contact Scality Support.
